DON PORCARO
(b. 1950)
Don Porcaro (b. 1950) is a New York-based artist whose sculptures explore the nature of human interaction with the physical world. With an emphasis on totemic iconography, his constructions focus on the layering of intricately carved stones to create forms at the intersection of figuration and architecture. His artworks are in the collection of the National Academy of Design (NYC), Emory University (Atlanta, GA), and numerous private collections. His work has been exhibited nationally and internationally in New York, NY, Mexico, Switzerland, France, Germany, South Korea, and Japan.
WESTWOOD GALLERY NYC is the exclusive worldwide representative for Don Porcaro.

ARTWORK

Primarily working with stone, Porcaro sources materials from across the word to enrich his sculptures with variations of color, texture, density, and origin.
Porcaro is interested in creating sculpture in an additive process that lets intuition guide the fluid experience of building columnar works from the ground up. Instead of working in a reductive carving process from a singular block, he cuts, builds, and assembles layers of various stones, joining them to create forms that allude to the accumulation of geological time as well as cultural history. In these regards, Porcaro’s sculptures become totemic, stone archetypes, that emphasize what is both architectural and human.
Porcaro’s influences include Isamu Noguchi, Constantin Brancusi, Martin Puryear, Nancy Holt, Sara Sze, Antony Gormley, Louise Bourgeois, his mentor and colleague Ronald Bladen, and Renaissance artists and architects Gian Lorenzo Bernini and Filippo Brunelleschi.
