CHARLES HINMAN:

STRUCTURES, 19652014

THE KREEGER MUSEUM, WASHINGTON D.C.
April 18 - July 31, 2019

In April 2019, The Kreeger Museum in Washington D.C. presented a solo retrospective of Westwood Gallery artist Charles Hinman’s paintings, drawings, and prints entitled Charles Hinman: Structures, 1965-2014. Previously in 2018, Westwood Gallery NYC presented a solo exhibition of Hinman’s 1960s – 2014 paintings and drawings, visited by The Kreeger Museum.

This was the first museum exhibition of Charles Hinman in the District of Columbia and the first comprehensive survey in more than two decades. Guest curated by Danielle O’Steen, the exhibition offered a look at 50 years of the artist’s innovative work.

A pioneer of the three-dimensional, shaped canvases started in the 1960s, Hinman is best known for his compositions that emerge from the wall in a collection of hand-built and multicolored planes, expanding the conventional space of the canvas.

Charles Hinman: Structures, 1965–2014 brought together historic paintings from the 1960s while also presenting objects that cast a new light on Hinman’s expansive, and ongoing, studio practice. The show included painted canvases, cast paper reliefs, and other experimental artworks.

The Kreeger Museum is a legacy to David and Carmen Kreeger who created a formidable collection of modern art beginning in 1959. The works in their collection reflect their dedication to art and continues with the museum’s public and educational programs. Included in their collection is Sails by Charles Hinman, a seminal work from 1965.

Sails was re-contextualized with Hinman’s groundbreaking shaped paintings from the 1960s and 1970s. The exhibition included three Hinman paintings on loan from the Hirshhorn Museum and Sculpture Garden, which were also shown in Hinman’s 1965 solo exhibition at the Richard Feigen Gallery in New York. The Kreeger Museum exhibition explored Hinman’s career, from his monumental and monochromatic paintings to his rarely-exhibited textile prints and drawings.
